This thesis aims to analyze hydrogels based on polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with genipin, a naturally occurring cross-linker known for its low toxicity and high biocompatibility. Their chemical, physical, mechanical, and absorption properties are evaluated, with a particular focus on stability, elasticity, level of cross-linking, and water retention capacity. The potential applications of PVA-genipin hydrogels in tissue engineering were also examined, particularly as an advanced dressing capable of promoting wound healing and as a temporary scaffold for bone regeneration. Data from the literature highlight good compatibility with biological tissues and a porous structure that promotes cell adhesion and proliferation. These characteristics make these materials potential candidates for applications in regenerative medicine and the development of innovative biomedical devices.
La presente tesi si propone di analizzare gli hydrogel a base di alcol polivinilico reticolato mediante genipina, un cross-linker di origine naturale noto per la sua bassa tossicità ed elevata biocompatibilità; valutandone le proprietà chimico-fisiche, meccaniche e di assorbimento, con un focus particolare sulla stabilità, elasticità, grado di reticolazione e capacità di trattenere acqua. Sono state inoltre esaminate le potenziali applicazioni dell’hydrogel PVA-genipina in ambito di ingegneria tissutale, in particolare il suo impiego come bendaggio avanzato in grado di favorire la guarigione delle ferite e come scaffold temporaneo per la rigenerazione ossea. I dati emersi dalla letteratura evidenziano una buona compatibilità con i tessuti biologici e una struttura porosa che favorisce l’adesione e proliferazione cellulare. Le caratteristiche delineate rendono questi materiali dei potenziali candidati per applicazioni in medicina rigenerativa e nello sviluppo di dispositivi biomedicali innovativi.
