After an initial contextualisation of panel methods within the field of aerodynamics, the study aims to describe them both from a general perspective and by going into detail for some of them. The focus of the work is the Hess–Smith method, which in 1967 initiated the development of these methods: here it is examined from both a theoretical and a practical point of view through an implementation with MATLAB software on the NACA4412 airfoil, and the corresponding comparison of the results with XFoil output. In addition, the study outlines the potential-based methods, which in the following years contributed to generalising and extending the validity of the pioneering Hess–Smith method. Finally, the previously described methods are compared in terms of performance and contexts of application.

Abstract
After an initial contextualisation of panel methods within the field of aerodynamics, the study aims to describe them both from a general perspective and by going into detail for some of them. The focus of the work is the Hess–Smith method, which in 1967 initiated the development of these methods: here it is examined from both a theoretical and a practical point of view through an implementation with MATLAB software on the NACA4412 airfoil, and the corresponding comparison of the results with XFoil output. In addition, the study outlines the potential-based methods, which in the following years contributed to generalising and extending the validity of the pioneering Hess–Smith method. Finally, the previously described methods are compared in terms of performance and contexts of application.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
