The aging population in Europe has made it increasingly important to understand the relationship between formal care (provided by healthcare professionals) and informal care (provided by family or friends). This thesis investigates whether these two types of care act as substitutes or complements, focusing on regional differences across European countries. The research is structured around a critical review of existing literature, a comparative analysis of key international studies, and an empirical investigation based on data from the easySHARE dataset. The empirical section, carried out through multiple regression models in R, focuses on single individuals with at least one child, analyzing how chronic conditions, cohabitation with a spouse, and interview year affect the likelihood of receiving formal care.

Abstract
The aging population in Europe has made it increasingly important to understand the relationship between formal care (provided by healthcare professionals) and informal care (provided by family or friends). This thesis investigates whether these two types of care act as substitutes or complements, focusing on regional differences across European countries. The research is structured around a critical review of existing literature, a comparative analysis of key international studies, and an empirical investigation based on data from the easySHARE dataset. The empirical section, carried out through multiple regression models in R, focuses on single individuals with at least one child, analyzing how chronic conditions, cohabitation with a spouse, and interview year affect the likelihood of receiving formal care.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
