This paper is based on the awareness that the school population reflects the composition of today’s society, which is increasingly heterogeneous and super-diverse (Vertovec, 2007). Consequently, it is crucial that the stories and images children encounter reflect this evolving diversity. In this context, children’s literature, and picturebooks in particular, play an essential role. Picturebooks, in fact, provide mirrors (Bishop, 1990) through which children can recognize themselves and find their own image reflected, thus seeing their presence within the community validated. At the same time, they open windows and doors (Bishop, 1990) onto other realities, fostering knowledge of the world. The paper, after presenting the contemporary context, the concept of interculture, and the potential of children’s literature, identifies five essential principles for those working from an intercultural perspective. From these principles, questions are drawn for the analysis of the representation of cultural otherness in picturebooks. The tool will be applied to a sample of picturebooks and will enable the selection of titles that offer a positive representation of cultural otherness.
Questo scritto si basa sulla consapevolezza che la popolazione scolastica riflette la composizione della società odierna e che quest’ultima è sempre più eterogenea, super-diversa (Vertovec, 2007). Emerge, pertanto, la necessità che le storie e le immagini sottoposte all’infanzia tengano conto di tale dinamicità. In questo contesto, la letteratura per l’infanzia e in particolare gli albi illustrati ricoprono un ruolo essenziale. Gli albi, infatti, forniscono specchi (Bishop, 1990), attraverso i quali i bambini possono riconoscersi e trovare la propria immagine riflessa, vedendo così validata la loro presenza nella comunità. Allo stesso tempo, aprono finestre e porte (Bishop, 1990) su altre realtà favorendo la conoscenza del mondo. L’elaborato, dopo una presentazione del contesto contemporaneo, del concetto di intercultura e delle potenzialità della letteratura per l’infanzia, individua cinque principi imprescindibili per chi opera in ottica interculturale da cui trarre delle domande per l’analisi della rappresentazione dell’alterità culturale negli albi illustrati. Lo strumento sarà applicato ad un campione di albi e consentirà di selezionare dei titoli che rappresentano positivamente l’alterità culturale.
