This thesis investigates the role of parental function in child development, with a specific focus on the implications of violent parental and educational practices, such as maltreatment and corporal punishment. Through a critical review of the scientific literature, both theoretical contributions and empirical findings were analyzed to show how adverse family experiences can profoundly affect a child’s developmental trajectory. In particular, the thesis examines the short- and long-term effects of such practices—including physical coercion, emotional neglect, and the systematic use of verbal and physical violence—highlighting their impact on the psychological well-being and the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive development of children and adolescents. The findings confirm that inadequate parental functioning, especially in family contexts characterized by coercive or abusive patterns, is strongly associated with the emergence of psychological difficulties and greater vulnerability to psychopathological disorders during developmental age. Furthermore, the review of the literature shows that the use of corporal punishment, despite its prevalence in many social and cultural contexts, is not only ineffective from an educational perspective but also entails significant risks for children’s mental health and well-being. These considerations apply not only within the family but also in the school environment, where the adoption of physical punitive measures proves equally inadequate and harmful to the educational process. The discussion raises important educational and social questions, emphasizing the urgency of promoting parenting models based on care, protection, and the recognition of children’s developmental needs, with a view to prevention and the safeguarding of a harmonious developmental process.
