Teorie e pratiche dell'arte cinematografica nella terza età

This thesis aims to explore the relationship between two themes dear to me: cinema and the age of old age. The thesis will follow an observational path that considers three different yet complementary perspectives on the topic. The first chapter, in fact, investigates how the elderly have been and continue to be represented in the Seventh Art, initially following a historical path, before arriving at an analysis that highlights the ways in which old age is treated in film industries around the world, with particular attention to the Italian context. This will be followed by an analysis of the reasons behind the representation of the elderly and their entirety in films, along with the differences that can emerge between different film genres, and the controversies that the representation of old age in the media can sometimes fuel. The second chapter continues the discussion begun in the first, but focuses more on the elderly themselves, how society relates to them, the family context in which they live and the relationships they maintain within it, with a final observation on the meanings given to old age today. In this section, cinematic art provides a concrete reference for the aspects discussed, highlighting once again how cinema can reflect today's reality and vice versa, and how reality can influence film production. Finally, the third chapter aims to consider cinema as a potential educational tool for the elderly. It will provide an in-depth look at film therapy in nursing homes and examine the possibilities and potential that cinema can have to concretely foster a good quality of life, a sense of belonging, and, above all, a healthy level of sociability. Sociality itself will be the closing theme of the chapter, observing how the Seventh Art can both promote social relationships among the elderly and bring people of different generations closer together.

Il presente lavoro di tesi si propone di indagare circa la relazione che intercorre tra due tematiche a me molto care: l’arte cinematografica e il periodo della terza età. L’elaborato seguirà un percorso di osservazione che considera tre punti di vista differenti ma complementari per il tema trattato. Il primo capitolo, infatti, si dedica ad indagare come l’anziano sia stato e venga tutt'ora rappresentato nella Settima Arte, seguendo dapprima un percorso di carattere storico, per poi giungere ad un’analisi che metta in luce le modalità con cui la terza età viene trattata nelle industrie cinematografiche del mondo prima, con un’attenzione particolare sul contesto italiano poi. Seguirà l’analisi delle ragioni che spingono a rappresentare l'anziano e la sua globalità all'interno delle pellicole, unitamente alle differenze che possono palesarsi tra i diversi generi cinematografici, e le controversie che talvolta la rappresentazione della terza età nei media può alimentare. Il secondo capitolo prosegue la trattazione avviata dal primo, dedicando però maggiore attenzione all'anziano stesso, al modo in cui la società si rapporta con esso, al contesto familiare in cui un anziano vive e le relazioni che intrattiene al suo interno, con un’osservazione finale ai significati che vengono dati oggigiorno alla vecchiaia. In questa sezione l'arte cinematografica permetterà di avere un riferimento concreto sugli aspetti trattati, evidenziando ancora una volta come il cinema possa rispecchiare la realtà odierna e viceversa, come la realtà possa influenzare la produzione cinematografica. Il terzo capitolo infine, intende considerare il cinema come potenziale mezzo educativo per le persone anziane. Verrà esposto un approfondimento sulla cinema-terapia nelle case di riposo e si osserveranno le possibilità e potenzialità che il cinema può avere per favorire concretamente una buona qualità di vita, un senso di appartenenza e, soprattutto, un buon livello di socialità. Proprio la socialità sarà il tema di chiusura del capitolo, osservando come la Settima Arte possa promuovere tanto le relazioni sociali tra anziani, quanto avvicinare persone appartenenti a generazioni diverse.
