"A Vindication of the Rights (and Wrongs) of Woman": il ruolo delle virtù nell'etica femminista

This thesis explores the role of virtues in feminist ethics, focusing on the intersections between morality, politics, and social transformation. Starting from the observation that contemporary feminism is increasingly framed as an individual moral practice, the research questions this moralistic turn by asking whether being virtuous is truly necessary to be a feminist. The first chapter introduces feminist ethics. The second chapter analyzes the concept of “good” through the lens of feminist virtue ethics, while the third links the moralistic drift of feminism to neoliberal mechanisms of surveillance and self-surveillance. The thesis argues that the aim of feminism is not to make individuals morally good, but to advance justice and liberation, thereby distinguishing, without severing, the ethical and the political dimensions.

La tesi indaga il ruolo delle virtù nell’etica femminista, con particolare attenzione al rapporto tra moralità, politica e trasformazione sociale. A partire dall’osservazione che il femminismo contemporaneo tende sempre più a essere interpretato come pratica morale individuale, la ricerca mette in discussione questa deriva moralistica, domandandosi se sia davvero necessario essere virtuose per dirsi femministe. Il primo capitolo introduce le principali caratteristiche dell’etica femminista. Il secondo capitolo affronta il concetto di “bene” attraverso la lente dell’etica femminista delle virtù, mentre il terzo capitolo collega la svolta moralistica del femminismo a logiche neoliberali di sorveglianza e autosorveglianza. La tesi sostiene che lo scopo del femminismo non sia quello di rendere le persone moralmente buone, bensì quello di promuovere giustizia e liberazione, distinguendo il piano politico da quello etico senza negarne le inevitabili intersezioni.
