The thesis traces the historical conditions and scientific developments that led to the definition of the atomic number as an identifying property of the elements of the periodic table and considers its role within contemporary and subsequent physical-atomic theories. It then evaluates the crucial role of atomic number in the ontological and essentialist debate on natural kinds and theoretical entities starting from the thoughts of Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam. Finally, it traces the relevance of the atomic number in the most recent currents of thought, trying to propose an organic picture of the state of the art in relation to essentialism and scientific realism in the field of the philosophy of chemistry, highlighting the role of models and following up its own evaluations and conclusions.

Abstract
The thesis traces the historical conditions and scientific developments that led to the definition of the atomic number as an identifying property of the elements of the periodic table and considers its role within contemporary and subsequent physical-atomic theories. It then evaluates the crucial role of atomic number in the ontological and essentialist debate on natural kinds and theoretical entities starting from the thoughts of Saul Kripke and Hilary Putnam. Finally, it traces the relevance of the atomic number in the most recent currents of thought, trying to propose an organic picture of the state of the art in relation to essentialism and scientific realism in the field of the philosophy of chemistry, highlighting the role of models and following up its own evaluations and conclusions.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
