According to some scholars, the involvement and integration of universities within prisons holds profound significance: it enables the construction of bridges between the “inside” and the “outside,” allowing the individuals involved in this process to rethink and rediscover themselves—an opportunity to aspire to a different future and open doors to the outside world. Education, training, and learning can positively impact the social reintegration process of individuals deprived of their liberty, as they allow them to acquire new knowledge (Decembrotto, De Rocco 2024). Throughout the writing of this thesis, an attempt was made to answer the following research question: What is the role and what are the practices of university tutoring within a total institution such as prison? Through a qualitative analysis conducted at the “Due Palazzi” prison in Padua, the study aimed to address this research question by examining the university tutoring practices promoted by the Paduan project “University in Prison.” The study concluded that the project is indeed significant for the re-education of incarcerated students. Moreover, semi-structured interviews conducted with imprisoned students revealed that the role of the tutor is both necessary and essential for the successful completion of the university path. The tutor provides support through which studying becomes a moment of social interaction and personal growth, despite the structural challenges identified during the investigation. Although national literature highlights key elements for the implementation of university tutoring programs, it also shows that this field remains largely unexplored, thus encouraging further research.

Abstract
According to some scholars, the involvement and integration of universities within prisons holds profound significance: it enables the construction of bridges between the “inside” and the “outside,” allowing the individuals involved in this process to rethink and rediscover themselves—an opportunity to aspire to a different future and open doors to the outside world. Education, training, and learning can positively impact the social reintegration process of individuals deprived of their liberty, as they allow them to acquire new knowledge (Decembrotto, De Rocco 2024).
