The thesis analyzes the connections between human and animal oppression, the structures that enable it, and anti-speciesist and prison abolition struggles. The first section illustrates the historical process that led to the birth of prison and the modern penal system, on the one hand, and speciesism and structures of animal exploitation, on the other one. The second section compares institutions such as prisons and immigration detention centres with structures of animal oppression such as zoos, slaughterhouses and animal testing laboratories, from the perspective of architecture, internal dynamics, control mechanisms, and the treatment and conditions of prisoners. Subsequently, similarities and differences are identified between the practices of active and passive resistance exercised by inmates in prisons and immigration detention centres, and those enacted by nonhuman animals held in these facilities. The conclusion illustrates possible alternatives to human and animal detention by presenting testimonies from organizations working towards total liberation which offer their unique perspectives on the issues and contents addressed in the thesis, and describe their strategies and methods of action. The thesis concludes with some final reflections on the key aspects of the essay and offers some ideas for future research.
