This thesis explores the historical, social, and political role of the female body in Ireland from 1979 to this day. Its focus is specifically on the influence of the Catholic Church, political powers and abortion rights. The 2012 death of Savita Halappanavar, due to the denial of a pregnancy termination, is the central case study—an emblematic event that sparked public outrage and triggered a popular mobilization leading to the 2018 referendum. After a first section dedicated to the historical and political context from 1979 to 2012, including the figure of Margaret Thatcher and the institutional control of the Church, the thesis focuses on the Halappanavar case and its consequences. Using an interdisciplinary approach and relying on journalistic and academic sources, the research goes on to analyse said consequences in the years preceding the legalisation of abortion. In conclusion the study examines the current state of abortion rights in Ireland, reflecting on how much has changed since 2018.
