This thesis analyzes the development, dynamics, and prospects of the Togolese audiovisual industry, with a particular focus on the production of French-language television series in the 21st century. In a historical and cultural context marked by colonial legacies, infrastructural shortcomings, and the absence of an established movie industry, Togolese cinema has found new forms of expression through digital technologies, serial storytelling, and online platforms. The first chapter explores the historical, cultural, and institutional framework within which Togolese cinema has developed, with reference to the Code du cinéma et de l’image animée (2021) and the role of institutions such as the CNCIA, the Cinémathèque nationale, and the HAAC. The second chapter focuses on the evolution of audiovisual production in the 21st century, examining the transition from film to digital, the spread of Francophone series, the use of digital platforms such as YouTube, the role of festivals, and the challenges related to funding. Through a qualitative methodology and discursive analysis of key recent works – including Sikavi, Campus, Oasis, Chroniques Togolaises, and Entre Nous – the thesis highlights how serial language has become a central tool for representation, resistance, and the construction of social identity. Togolese series stand out for their ability to address local themes with accessible languages, blending global aesthetics with local cultural codes. The dissertation highlights the transformative potential of Togolese cinema, capable of creating autonomous narrative spaces even in the absence of a structured industry, and offers a refection on the role of public support and cultural policies as tools for consolidating a national, inclusive, and sustainable audiovisual ecosystem.
Questa tesi analizza lo sviluppo, le dinamiche e le prospettive dell’industria audiovisiva togolese, con particolare attenzione alla produzione di serie televisive in lingua francese nel XXI secolo. In un contesto storico e culturale segnato da eredità coloniali, carenze infrastrutturali e assenza di un sistema cinematografico consolidato, il cinema togolese ha trovato nuove vie di espressione attraverso le tecnologie digitali, la serialità e le piattaforme online. Il primo capitolo esplora il quadro storico, culturale e istituzionale entro cui si è formato il cinema togolese, con riferimento al Code du cinéma et de l’image animée (2021) e al ruolo di enti come il CNCIA, la Cinémathèque nationale e la HAAC. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sull’evoluzione della produzione audiovisiva nel XXI secolo, esaminando il passaggio dalla pellicola al digitale, la diffusione delle serie francofone, l’utilizzo di piattaforme digitali come YouTube, il ruolo dei festival e le sfide legate al finanziamento. Attraverso una metodologia qualitativa e un’analisi discorsiva delle principali opere recenti – tra cui Sikavi, Campus, Oasis, Chroniques Togolaises ed Entre Nous – la tesi evidenzia come il linguaggio seriale sia divenuto uno strumento centrale di rappresentazione, resistenza e costruzione dell’identità sociale. Le serie togolesi si distinguono per la capacità di affrontare tematiche locali con linguaggi accessibili, ibridando estetiche globali e codici culturali locali. L’elaborato mette in luce il potenziale trasformativo del cinema togolese, capace di costruire spazi narrativi autonomi anche in assenza di un'industria strutturata, e propone una riflessione sul ruolo del sostegno pubblico e delle politiche culturali come strumenti per il consolidamento di un ecosistema audiovisivo nazionale, inclusivo e sostenibile.
