Cinema e identità regionale: il caso del Friuli Venezia Giulia

The thesis aims to analyze the evolution of the relationship between cinema and territory in Friuli Venezia Giulia, with special attention for the use and valorization of the regional landsacape before and after the Film Commission. The work is suddivided in three chapters. The first offers an overview of cinema in Friuli Venezia Giulia before Film Commission, highlithing how the use of Friulian language and the places have changed with time, specially with the entrace of american productions. In this context, the cinematic narration it’s mostly related to the theme of war, given the historical relevance of the territory. The second chapter introduces the concept of Film Commission, showing the origin, goals and operating modes, with a specific focus on Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, one of the most active at the national level. It is analyzed the role of Film Fund, that is a financial instrument designed to encourage cinematographic and audiovisual productions in the region. In the thrid chapter, two films are analyzed, at festival level, in order to compare the valorization and the visual mode of territory. The goal of the thesis is to demonstrate how cinema, with the evolution of audiovisual production and the support of instituctions, had contributed to promote the friulan landscape, either before Film Commission or in nowadays.

La presente tesi si propone di analizzare l’evoluzione del rapporto tra cinema e territorio in Friuli Venezia Giulia, con particolare attenzione all’uso e alla valorizzazione del paesaggio regionale prima e dopo l’istituzione della Film Commission. Il lavoro è articolato in tre capitoli. Il primo offre una panoramica storica sul cinema in Friuli Venezia Giulia prima dell’arrivo delle Film Commission, evidenziando come l’utilizzo della lingua friulana e dei luoghi si sia modificato nel tempo, soprattutto con l’ingresso delle produzioni americane. In questo contesto, la narrazione cinematografica è spesso legata al tema della guerra, data la rilevanza storica del territorio. Il secondo capitolo introduce il concetto di Film Commission, illustrandone origine, obiettivi e modalità operative, con un focus specifico sulla Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, una delle più attive a livello nazionale. Viene inoltre analizzato il ruolo del Film Fund, strumento finanziario pensato per incentivare le produzioni cinematografiche e audiovisive nella regione. Nel terzo capitolo vengono analizzati due film di circuito festivaliero, al fine di confrontare le modalità di rappresentazione e valorizzazione del territorio. L’obiettivo della tesi è dimostrare come il cinema, attraverso l’evoluzione delle produzioni e il supporto delle istituzioni, abbia contribuito a promuovere e reinterpretare il paesaggio friulano, sia in epoca preesistente alle Film Commission che nel contesto attuale.
