The aim of this thesis is to analyze the American translations of Elsa Morante’s novel “Menzogna e Sortilegio” (1948) and reflect on their main differences and analogies: “House of Liars”, published in 1951 by Adrienne Foulke, and “Lies and Sorcery”, Jenny McPhee’s 2023 translation. The first translation (“House of Liars”, 1951) by Adrienne Foulke was heavily criticized because it was not fully accurate and because it had significantly reduced the original novel. This is also why a new translation of the novel, entitled “Lies and Sorcery”, was published in 2023 by Jenny McPhee, who restored the parts that had been previously removed. This dissertation is divided into three chapters, and, after an overview of Morante’s biography and of her novel “Menzogna e Sortilegio”, the study focuses on a comparison between the two American texts and the original Italian novel. Through a comparative analysis of some significant passages of the novel, the research shows the linguistic and stylistic challenges that Morante’s writing has posed to the two translators.
