From the Canzoniere to the Elizabethan tradition: Petrarch's influence on Shakespeare's sonnets

This thesis analyses the influence of Petrarch’s Canzoniere on Shakespeare’s Sonnets, focusing on how the English poet simultaneously draws from and subverts the Petrarchan tradition. Following an introduction to Petrarch’s literary legacy and the spread of Petrarchism across Europe, the study explores the Elizabethan context and its Anti-petrarchan tendencies. The central section offers a textual comparison between selected sonnets, highlighting thematic continuities alongside formal and conceptual ruptures. The analysis reveals a complex relationship in which Shakespeare critically engages with Petrarch’s model, helping to reshape love poetry in early modern literature.

La tesi analizza l’influenza del Canzoniere di Petrarca sui Sonnets di Shakespeare, ponendo attenzione al modo in cui l’autore inglese riprende e al tempo stesso sovverte i tratti distintivi della tradizione petrarchesca. Dopo un’introduzione alla figura di Petrarca e alla diffusione del petrarchismo in ambito europeo, si esamina il contesto elisabettiano e le sue tendenze anti petrarchesche. La parte centrale propone un confronto testuale tra sonetti selezionati, mettendo in luce continuità tematiche e strategie di rottura formale e concettuale. L’analisi evidenzia una relazione complessa, in cui Shakespeare dialoga criticamente con il modello petrarchesco, contribuendo a ridefinire la lirica amorosa nella modernità.
