La gioventù eroica: costruzione di un eroe medievale

The thesis, titled «Heroic youth : the construction of a medieval hero », explores the role of youth in medieval literature, considering it not only as a biological stage but also as a political and social category. Youth is considered not merely as a formative period, but also as a crucial moment in the development of the hero. Through the analysis of three textual groups – 12th-century’s French chivalry, the “Mocedades de Rodrigo” and the genre of “enfances” – it emerges that youth represents the stage in which the trials and challenges that shape the hero are concentrated. Indeed, for both biological and social reasons, young people are considered the most suited to face the world of war and to embark on a path of growth marked by loyalty and valor. The thesis also focused particular attention to the Mocedades de Rodrigo, a Castilian poem that recounts the youthful exploits of El Cid. This text offers an exemplary case of the medieval heroic model, in which youth becomes the decisive moment for the protagonist’s affirmation within the social order. Finally, the thesis focuses on how epic discourse contributes to the development of an educational model designed to train not only warriors, but also men capable of playing an active role in society.

L’elaborato dal titolo La gioventù eroica: costruzione di un eroe nel medioevo indaga il ruolo della giovinezza nella letteratura medievale, considerandola non solo come fase biologica, ma come categoria politica e sociale. La giovinezza viene quindi considerata non solo un periodo di formazione, ma anche un momento cruciale per la costruzione dell'eroe. Attraverso l’analisi di tre nuclei testuali – la cavalleria francese del XII secolo, il poema castigliano Mocedades de Rodrigo e il genere delle enfances – emerge come la gioventù rappresenti il momento in cui si concentrano le prove e le sfide che plasmano l’eroe. I giovani infatti per ragioni biologiche e sociali, sono ritenuti gli individui più adatti ad affrontare il mondo bellico e a intraprendere un percorso di crescita attraverso prove di coraggio e fedeltà. La tesi, inoltre, pone attenzione sulle Mocedades de Rodrigo, poema castigliano in cui vengono narrate le gesta giovanili del Cid. Il testo propone un caso esemplare di modello eroico medievale, in cui la giovinezza rappresenta il momento decisivo per l’affermazione del protagonista all’interno dell’ordine sociale. L'elaborato si sofferma, quindi, su come il discorso epico contribuisca a veicolare un modello educativo finalizzato alla formazione non solo di guerrieri, ma anche di uomini capaci di assumere un ruolo attivo nella società.
