The thesis examines Émile Zola’s novel L’Assommoir within the naturalist project of the Rougon-Macquart cycle, examining the representation of the working-class condition in 19th-century Paris. The novel is analysed as a tool for social criticism, through the study of its characters, the urban environment and the mechanisms of social decay. In conclusion, the thesis considers Zola’s vision of the society, relating it to the contemporary issues of inequality.
La tesi esamina L’Assommoir di Émile Zola all’interno del progetto naturalista dei Rougon-Macquart, con particolare attenzione alla rappresentazione della condizione operaia nella Parigi del XIX secolo. Il romanzo viene analizzato come strumento di denuncia sociale, attraverso lo studio dei personaggi, dell’ambiente urbano e dei meccanismi di degrado. In conclusione, la tesi propone una riflessione sulla visione zoliana della società, mettendola in relazione con le problematiche contemporanee legate alla disuguaglianza.

Abstract
