This thesis aims to analyze the inner conflict of Werther, the protagonist of Goethe's novel "The sorrows of young Werther", shedding light on the relationship between love and self-destruction. After placing the work in the cultural context of Sturm und Drang and the author's biography, we will focus on the epistolary structure and emotional language, the main characteristics that express the protagonist's crisis. Love is perceived as ambivalent: on the one hand an expression of individuality and, on the other, a cause of self-destruction. Finally, the thesis reflects on the cultural impact of the novel, illustrating what is known as "Werther fever".
