This thesis aims to explore the epistolary novel in eighteenth-century Europe, with a particular focus on the case of The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang Goethe. The main objective is to analyze how the epistolary form was employed in the 1700s not only as a narrative technique, but also as a privileged means for expressing subjectivity and inner turmoil. The first chapter offers an overview of the development and significance of epistolary writing in the eighteenth century, highlighting the cultural and social transformations that contributed to its popularity. Attention will then shift to the specific case of the Briefroman in Germany, examining the cultural context of Goethe’s era and the intellectual climate marked by the Sturm und Drang movement and a growing interest in individual emotion and interiority. The second chapter focuses on The Sorrows of Young Werther, analyzing selected letters from the protagonist. Through a close reading of the epistolary structure, the study will show how letter writing becomes a vehicle for introspection, revealing Werther’s emotional conflicts and existential crisis. The analysis highlights the central role of the epistolary form as a space for authenticity and self-expression during a period of transition between Enlightenment rationalism and pre-Romantic sensitivity.
