Neomedievalismo e tradizione germanica: l'eredità anglosassone nell'universo di Game of Thrones

The reasons for investigating such a complex and fascinating phenomenon as neomedievalism are manifold and significant. Observing contemporary cultural development, in which the Middle Ages are revived and reinterpreted through different media and forms of expression, it becomes clear that this historical period holds a central place in the collective imagination. The medieval past thus turns into a narrative tool, as well as a symbolic filter and a key to interpreting the present, taking on new and unexpected shapes. Through the interplay of historical, literary, and media perspectives, this research aims to explore the connections between Anglo-Saxon tradition and its neomedieval reception in the works of George R.R. Martin and their television adaptation. The study begins with a theoretical overview of neomedievalist thought, with particular focus on the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien and on the representation of the Middle Ages in Martin’s universe. It then proceeds with an examination of Anglo-Saxon civilization and literature, introducing the epic poem Beowulf as a paradigm of Germanic heroic tradition. The final part is devoted to a comparative analysis of Beowulf and Daenerys Targaryen, linked by their confrontation with the figure of the dragon and by the inescapability of fate (wyrd). The main purpose of this work is therefore to highlight how the concept of neomedievalism allows for a meaningful dialogue between past and present, emphasizing the vitality of literary and cultural models that continue to find new expression in contemporary times.

Le ragioni che spiegano un’indagine su un fenomeno tanto complesso e suggestivo come il neomedievalismo sono molteplici e di grande rilievo: osservando lo sviluppo culturale contemporaneo, in cui il Medioevo viene riproposto e reinterpretato attraverso linguaggi e media differenti, si coglie come tale epoca storica assuma un ruolo centrale nell’immaginario collettivo. Il passato medievale diviene così uno strumento narrativo, nonché filtro simbolico e chiave di lettura del presente, assumendo forme nuove e inattese. Attraverso l’intreccio di prospettive storiche, letterarie e mediali, l’obiettivo della ricerca è studiare i legami tra la tradizione anglosassone e la sua ricezione neomedievale nell’opera di George R.R. Martin e nel suo adattamento televisivo. L’indagine prende avvio da un approfondimento teorico sul pensiero neomedievalista, con particolare attenzione all’influenza di J.R.R. Tolkien e alla rappresentazione dell’Età di Mezzo nell’universo martiniano; si prosegue con uno studio sulla civiltà anglosassone e sulla relativa letteratura, che introduce il poema Beowulf, paradigma dell’epica germanica; l’ultima parte è dedicata a un’analisi comparata tra l’eroe Beowulf e Daenerys Targaryen, accumunati dal confronto con la figura del drago e dall’ineluttabilità del destino (wyrd). In questo percorso, il fine principale è mettere in evidenza come il concetto di neomedievalismo consenta di instaurare un dialogo significativo tra passato e presente, sottolineando la vitalità di modelli letterari e culturali che continuano a trovare espressione nell’attualità.
