This thesis examines Pedro Almodóvar’s cinema as a privileged space for reflection on desire, freedom, and femininity in post-Franco Spain. The research begins with an overview of the historical and cultural context of the Spanish Transition, highlighting how the fall of censorship and the emergence of the Movida madrileña created new opportunities for artistic and cultural expression. Through the analysis of key works such as Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980) and Fuego en las entrañas (1981), the study explores desire as a narrative engine and the central role of women, depicted as independent, complex, and provocative subjects. Particular attention is given to female complicity and the deconstruction of toxic masculinity, which redefine gender relations in innovative ways. At the same time, the research emphasizes Almodóvar’s subversive force in challenging taboos and conventions inherited from the regime, offering an alternative imagery based on freedom, plurality, and irony. The thesis demonstrates how his artistic production not only reshaped Spanish cinema but also contributed to building a new social and political discourse, influencing international debates on gender, sexuality, and family models. Almodóvar’s legacy thus lies in his ability to transform cinema into a tool of emancipation, breaking with the dictatorial past and opening new perspectives for the representation of identities.
La presente tesi analizza il cinema di Pedro Almodóvar come spazio privilegiato di riflessione sul desiderio, sulla libertà e sulla femminilità nella Spagna post-franchista. L’indagine parte dalla ricostruzione del contesto storico e sociale della Transición, mettendo in evidenza come il superamento della censura e il fenomeno della Movida madrileña abbiano offerto nuove possibilità di espressione artistica e culturale. Attraverso l’analisi di opere significative, come Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón (1980) e Fuego en las entrañas (1981), viene approfondito il ruolo del desiderio come motore narrativo e la centralità della donna, rappresentata come soggetto indipendente, complesso e provocatorio. Un’attenzione particolare è dedicata alla complicità femminile e alla decostruzione della mascolinità tossica, che permettono di ridefinire i rapporti di genere in chiave innovativa. Parallelamente, lo studio mette in luce la forza trasgressiva di Almodóvar nel sovvertire tabù e convenzioni ereditati dal regime, offrendo un immaginario alternativo fondato su libertà, pluralità e ironia. La tesi evidenzia come la sua produzione artistica non solo abbia trasformato il panorama cinematografico spagnolo, ma abbia anche contribuito alla costruzione di un nuovo discorso sociale e politico, influenzando il dibattito internazionale su genere, sessualità e modelli familiari. L’eredità almodovariana risiede quindi nella sua capacità di trasformare il cinema in uno strumento di emancipazione, capace di rompere con il passato dittatoriale e aprire nuove prospettive per la rappresentazione delle identità.
