"René" de Chateaubriand ou l’avènement du héros romantique

The aim of this thesis is to delineate the figure of the emerging romantic hero within 19th century French literature, in particular through François-René de Chateaubriand's work “René”. The initial analysis of the historical and cultural context of a century marked by deep political, social and ideological changes serves to frame both the state of mind in which the author writes the work and the thinking of the pre-Romantic hero René, afflicted by the existential crisis caused by the unprecedented scale of the French Revolution. We then proceed to deal with the “héros romantique”, an emblematic figure of literary Romanticism: “René” is configured as a novel of formation and presents typically pre-Romantic themes: the feeling of loneliness, existential restlessness, the desire to escape, the connection with nature and melancholy. In particular, the concept of “vague des passions”, central to the work, embodies the uncertainty and anguish that characterises the protagonist's soul. The analysis also focuses on the novel's partially autobiographical character, highlighting the parallelism between René's life and that of its author. Finally, the work's role in the broader project of the “Génie du Christianisme” is examined, in which the author defends the Christian religion as a source of beauty, morality and consolation. To this end, père Souël's final moral will be helpful in understanding the work's message.

Questa tesi ha l’obbiettivo di delineare la figura del nascente eroe romantico all’interno della letteratura francese del XIX secolo, in particolare grazie all’opera "René" di François-René de Chateaubriand. L’iniziale analisi del contesto storico e culturale di un secolo segnato da profondi sconvolgimenti politici, sociali e ideologici serve a inquadrare sia lo stato d’animo con cui l’autore scrive l’opera, sia il pensiero dell’eroe preromantico René, afflitto dalla crisi esistenziale causata dalla portata senza precedenti della Rivoluzione francese. Si procede quindi a trattare dell’“héros romantique”, figura emblematica del Romanticismo letterario: "René" si configura come un romanzo di formazione e presenta temi tipicamente preromantici: il sentimento di solitudine, l’inquietudine esistenziale, il desiderio di evasione, la malinconia e il rapporto con la natura. In particolare, il concetto di “vague des passions”, centrale nell’opera, incarna l’incertezza e l’angoscia che caratterizzano l’animo del protagonista. L’analisi si sofferma inoltre sul carattere parzialmente autobiografico del romanzo, mettendo in evidenza i parallelismi tra la vita di René e quella del suo autore. Infine, viene esaminato il ruolo dell’opera nel più ampio progetto del "Génie du Christianisme", in cui l’autore difende la religione cristiana come fonte di bellezza, morale e consolazione. A tale scopo, la morale finale del père Souël sarà utile per comprendere il messaggio dell’opera.
