Difendere l’onore, riscrivere la sconfitta: la battaglia del Volturno nella memoria post-unitaria borbonica

This thesis analyzes the early Neo-Bourbon revisionist narratives produced in the immediate aftermath of the fall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, with a particular focus on the Battle of the Volturno (fought between September and October 1860). It examines three primary sources written by individuals who experienced the events firsthand: Giacinto de Sivo, Giosuè Ritucci, and Giuseppe Ruiz de Ballesteros. The study reconstructs a heated polemical debate in which the memory of defeat becomes a battleground for mutual accusations of betrayal and incompetence. It highlights how these authors, while carefully avoiding any criticism of the king, sought to defend their own reputations by shifting blame onto others and ultimately transforming the Volturno into a symbol of both heroic loyalty to the crown and alleged internal and external conspiracies that inevitably led to the collapse of the Bourbon regime.

Questa tesi analizza le narrazioni revisioniste neoborboniche prodotte immediatamente dopo la caduta del Regno delle Due Sicilie, con particolare attenzione alla battaglia del Volturno (svoltasi tra settembre e ottobre 1860), attraverso lo studio di tre fonti primarie che hanno vissuto in prima persona gli eventi: Giacinto de Sivo, Giosuè Ritucci e Giuseppe Ruiz de Ballesteros. Si ricostruisce un acceso dibattito polemico tra i protagonisti, in cui la memoria della sconfitta diventa terreno di scontro per accuse reciproche di tradimento e incompetenza. Il lavoro mette in luce come questi autori, pur evitando ogni critica al loro sovrano, abbiano cercato di difendere la propria reputazione, cercando di addossare ad altri le responsabilità del disastro militare e trasformando il Volturno in un simbolo sia di eroismo e lealtà alla corona, sia di presunti complotti interni ed esterni che hanno inevitabilmente portato al collasso del regime borbonico.
