Le mura cinquecentesche di Padova: tra storia e salvaguardia

Following the Battle of Agnadello and the subsequent siege of Padua, both occurring in 1509, the Stato da Tera underwent a massive renovation of the existing fortifications. It was a revolution in Venetian policy that involved the main cities of the dominions belonging to the Serenissima. In Padua, there was a transition from the medieval walls, of Carrarese heritage, to the complex system of Italian-style fortifications that still delimits the city's historic centre. Neglecting certain events related to the revolutionary uprisings of the 19th century and what happened during the two world wars, the mighty bulwarks defending the city of Padua were never seriously challenged.

In seguito alla battaglia di Agnadello e al successivo assedio di Padova, entrambi occorsi nel 1509, lo Stato da Tera fu oggetto di un'imponente opera di rinnovamento delle fortificazioni esistenti. Fu una rivoluzione della politica veneziana che coinvolse le principali città dei domini afferenti alla Serenissima. A Padova si assistette alla transizione dalle mura medievali, di eredità carrarese, al complesso sistema di fortificazione all’italiana che tuttora delimita il centro storico della città. Trascurando alcuni eventi legati ai moti rivoluzionari del XIX secolo e quanto avvenne nel corso dei due conflitti mondiali, i possenti baluardi posti a difesa della città patavina non vennero mai messi seriamente alla prova.
