This thesis analyzes the evolution of female domestic work in Italy, with a particular focus on the transformations that took place between 1960 and 1980 and a comparison with the current situation. After examining the persistent gender inequality in the management of household tasks, the study explores the social, economic, and cultural changes that affected the country during that period, including the economic boom, urbanization, and the increasing participation of women in the labor market. The research traces the historical role of domestic work as a “natural” duty assigned to women and highlights its centrality through feminist theoretical contributions. Finally, the thesis reflects on how past transformations have, or have not, effectively changed the organization of domestic labor, pointing to cultural resistance that still persists in contemporary Italian society.

Abstract
This thesis analyzes the evolution of female domestic work in Italy, with a particular focus on the transformations that took place between 1960 and 1980 and a comparison with the current situation. After examining the persistent gender inequality in the management of household tasks, the study explores the social, economic, and cultural changes that affected the country during that period, including the economic boom, urbanization, and the increasing participation of women in the labor market. The research traces the historical role of domestic work as a “natural” duty assigned to women and highlights its centrality through feminist theoretical contributions. Finally, the thesis reflects on how past transformations have, or have not, effectively changed the organization of domestic labor, pointing to cultural resistance that still persists in contemporary Italian society.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
