Pilgrimage represents one of the oldest and most significant forms of human mobility, an expression of inner research, religious devotion and desire for connection with the sacred. This thesis focuses on the examination of pilgrimage from a historical, cultural and social point of view, highlighting how it has changed over the centuries and its various current manifestations. The thesis is divided into five chapters, each of which deals with a specific aspect of the subject. The survey begins with an in-depth analysis of the roots of pilgrimage and its evolution, and then, in the second chapter, examine some significant routes, such as the Way of Santiago de Compostela, the Hajj to Mecca and the path of Saint Francis in Italy. Next, the third chapter examines the relationship between pilgrimage and religious tourism, focusing on themes such as hospitality, the use of ecclesiastical goods, the feeding of pilgrims and the narration of the experience through guides and travel diaries. The fourth chapter addresses contemporary challenges affecting pilgrimage, including environmental issues, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, armed conflicts in sacred places and new forms of pilgrimage that are not necessarily religious. The last part of the work presents the results of an empirical survey conducted through a questionnaire addressed to a sample of 204 individuals, with the objective of understanding motivations, behaviors and perceptions related to this practice. The thesis aims to offer a critical and multidisciplinary view on pilgrimage, highlighting its ability to combine tradition and modernity, spirituality and culture, personal and collective dimensions, Standing as an experience still significant today in a society in constant transformation.
Il pellegrinaggio rappresenta una delle forme più antiche e significative di mobilità umana, espressione di ricerca interiore, devozione religiosa e desiderio di connessione con il sacro. La presente tesi si concentra sull'esame del pellegrinaggio da un punto di vista storico, culturale e sociale, mettendo in luce come si è trasformato nel corso dei secoli e le sue diverse manifestazioni attuali. La tesi si articola in cinque capitoli, ciascuno dei quali affronta un aspetto specifico della tematica trattata. L'indagine comincia con un'analisi approfondita delle radici del pellegrinaggio e della sua evoluzione, per poi, nel secondo capitolo, esaminare alcuni itinerari significativi, come il Cammino di Santiago di Compostela, l'Hajj alla Mecca e il percorso di San Francesco in Italia. Successivamente, il terzo capitolo esamina la relazione tra pellegrinaggio e turismo religioso, soffermandosi su temi quali l’ospitalità, la fruizione dei beni ecclesiastici, l’alimentazione dei pellegrini e la narrazione dell’esperienza attraverso le guide e i diari di viaggio. Nel quarto capitolo vengono affrontate le sfide contemporanee che interessano il pellegrinaggio, tra cui le questioni ambientali, l’impatto della pandemia di COVID-19, i conflitti armati nei luoghi sacri e le nuove forme di pellegrinaggio non necessariamente religiose. L’ultima parte del lavoro presenta i risultati di un’indagine empirica condotta attraverso un questionario rivolto a un campione di 204 individui, con l’obiettivo di comprendere motivazioni, comportamenti e percezioni legati a questa pratica. La tesi intende offrire uno sguardo critico e multidisciplinare sul pellegrinaggio, evidenziandone la capacità di coniugare tradizione e modernità, spiritualità e cultura, dimensione personale e collettiva, ponendosi come esperienza ancora oggi significativa in una società in continua trasformazione.
