Gender stereotypes, both male and female, have always existed and still exist today; we can find them everywhere, from advertisements, to television series. But what are the patterns that most emerge from television dramas? Do they succeed in reflecting the changes that are taking place or do they carry stereotypes? What are the values related to gender identity that are conveyed by young adult series? This thesis aims to analyze the gender stereotypes and models that are communicated through TV dramas dedicated to a young audience. The first chapter introduces and explains the difference between the terms “gender” and “sex,” then it goes on to define the concept of gender identity. It proceeds in exploring the major gender stereotypes and how these are conveyed by the media. In the second chapter, the TV series macro-genre is introduced, with a focus on fiction for young audiences. It analyzes its main characteristics, recurring themes and the influence these shows have on young minds. Finally, in the third chapter, we get into the heart of the analysis of gender models and stereotypes in young adult fiction, presenting some examples. The analysis is based on a comparison between series aired in the late 1990s, early 2000s, taking as examples significant series such as “The O.C.” and “One tree hill,” where characters often reflect traditional gender roles, and more recent ones, such as “SKAM” and “Sex Education”, which propose a progressive overcoming of stereotypes. The goal is to identify how male and female characters are portrayed, to highlight the main patterns that are conveyed, and to recognize any presence of figures that counter traditional gender roles.

Abstract
The goal is to identify how male and female characters are portrayed, to highlight the main patterns that are conveyed, and to recognize any presence of figures that counter traditional gender roles.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
