Quando la politica parla di femminicidio: Analisi del linguaggio politico e dei frame ideologici nel caso Cecchettin

This thesis analyses how the issue of feminicide and gender-based violence is discussed in the Italian political debate. In particular, it studies how the language used can activate different cognitive frames and preconceptions, even if only through the lexical choice adopted when presenting a fact. The case study considered is the murder of Giulia Cecchettin, occurred in November 2023, an episode symbolizing a strong social mobilization against gender-based violence. The frame of reference is political communication, with a specific focus on the linguistic choices made and their relation to the perception of the event. The research is based on the analysis of public statements, posts and interviews made by political figures from different sides, examined through a chart purposely created to associate the language used with the cognitive frames activated in the dialogue: from the representation of feminicides as isolated events due to individual deviance, to their definition as a structural and systemic phenomenon. Therefore, it is analysed how the political actor contributes to defining the dimension of the problem through the linguistic strategy adopted. The role of the media, which is responsible for the way the news is conveyed, is also considered. Lastly, social consequences are highlighted, meaning how people can unconsciously internalize preconceptions and sometimes even prejudices. The goal of the thesis is to show how much the perception of a story can be influenced by the communication strategy, and how this affects the social relevance of the phenomenon, political and economic choices, collective mobilization and legislative sources. Questa tesi analizza il modo in cui il tema del femminicidio e della violenza di genere viene discusso nel dibattito politico italiano. In particolare, si studia come il linguaggio utilizzato possa attivare frame cognitivi e preconcetti differenti, anche solo attraverso la scelta lessicale adottata nel presentare un fatto. Il caso di studio considerato è l’omicidio di Giulia Cecchettin, avvenuto nel novembre 2023, episodio simbolo di una forte mobilitazione sociale contro la violenza di genere. L’ambito di riferimento è quello della comunicazione politica, con un focus specifico sulle scelte linguistiche operate e sulla loro relazione con la percezione dell’evento. La ricerca si basa sull’analisi di dichiarazioni pubbliche, post e interviste rilasciate da esponenti politici appartenenti a diversi schieramenti, esaminate attraverso una tabella creata appositamente per associare il linguaggio utilizzato ai frame cognitivi attivati nel discorso: dalla rappresentazione dei femminicidi come eventi isolati dovuti a devianze individuali, fino alla loro definizione come fenomeno strutturale e sistemico. Si analizza dunque come l’attore politico contribuisca a definire la dimensione del problema attraverso la strategia linguistica adottata. Viene inoltre considerato il ruolo dei media, responsabili delle modalità di veicolazione della notizia. Infine, si mettono in luce le conseguenze sul piano sociale, ovvero come la popolazione possa interiorizzare inconsciamente preconcetti e, talvolta, anche pregiudizi. L’obiettivo della tesi è mostrare quanto la percezione di una notizia possa essere influenzata dalla scelta comunicativa, e come ciò incida sulla rilevanza sociale del fenomeno, sulle scelte politiche ed economiche, sulla mobilitazione collettiva e sulle fonti legislative. Il caso Cecchettin è stato scelto per la sua forte risonanza mediatica e sociale, che lo rende un contesto significativo per l’analisi.
