This thesis explores the relationship between young people and Italian singer-songwriter music, analyzing how this musical genre has evolved and continues to influence music consumption and sharing practices in the digital age. Starting from an analysis of music's role as an element of socialization and identity construction in contemporary society, the study examines the transition from physical media to streaming platforms, highlighting how these transformations have modified musical consumption. The research then focuses on Italian singer-songwriter music, outlining its historical-cultural context, key figures, and the distinctive thematic and poetic characteristics that define it. Using semi-structured interviews as methodology, the study explores the mechanisms of discovery, consumption, and perception of the singer-songwriter genre among young listeners aged 19 to 32. The analysis focuses on six macro-themes: musical consumption patterns, access to singer-songwriter music, distinctive characteristics of the genre, social and identity dimensions, generational dynamics, and contemporary evolution. The results highlight how singer-songwriter music continues to satisfy cross-cutting cultural needs, providing tools for emotional self-regulation and identity construction. However, significant challenges emerge related to competition with immediate forms of entertainment and transformations in digital music consumption patterns. The research also documents spaces of resistance and revival, emphasizing the crucial role of mediating figures and the emergence of new forms of hybridization within the singer-songwriter tradition.
