This paper aims to critically examine the meaning and implications of motherhood in contemporary Italy, in light of profound socio-cultural transformations and persistent gender inequalities. In a demographic context characterized by a sharp decline in birth rates and a widening fertility gap, motherhood is increasingly framed as a matter of collective and political concern, rather than a purely private choice. The paper analyzes the main structural and cultural barriers that hinder a serene and sustainable parenting experience, with a specific focus on maternal mental health — a dimension often overlooked in public discourse and welfare policies. Particular attention is given to the concept of mental load, understood as the cognitive and emotional burden mothers bear in the simultaneous management of familial, professional, and social responsibilities. By examining up-to-date statistical data, legal frameworks, and comparing selected European models, this work seeks to highlight the shortcomings of the Italian system in supporting parenthood and fostering gender equality. The analysis aims to encourage a critical reflection on current family policies, emphasizing the urgent need for structured and multidimensional interventions that recognize motherhood as a shared social responsibility, and that promote psychological, social, and economic well-being within a genuinely inclusive and egalitarian framework

Abstract
The analysis aims to encourage a critical reflection on current family policies, emphasizing the urgent need for structured and multidimensional interventions that recognize motherhood as a shared social responsibility, and that promote psychological, social, and economic well-being within a genuinely inclusive and egalitarian framework| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
