This thesis traces the historical and conceptual evolution of the concept of poverty from its ancient philosophical roots to more recent sociological approaches. It analyzes how poverty has evolved from a spiritual and moral condition to a structural phenomenon related to systemic inequalities, marginality and social exclusion, with increasing attention to its multidimensional nature. The theories of a number of authors are presented, highlighting connections with modernity, globalization and insecurity, contributing to the contemporary debate on overcoming poverty; Armatya Sen revolutionized the study of poverty by moving beyond the traditional monetarist view and proposing a multidimensional approach based on capabilities and functionings, that is on the concrete freedom of individuals to lead lives they find meaningful. Critical of one-dimensional indicators based on income, Sen developed the Poverty Index that bears his name, capable of integrating incidence, intensity and inequality among the poor. His thinking paved the way for new metrics and approaches to assessing human well-being that are more inclusive and representative of social complexity.
