Background: The hospitalization experience significantly influences outcomes in neurorehabilitation. The literature is extensive for stroke patients but less so for those with Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis (MS). Aim: To explore and describe the lived experience of individuals hospitalized in a neurorehabilitation unit, with a focus on their daily life, perceptions of care and rehabilitation, and the personal meaning they attribute to specific events during their stay. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 37 patients (13 with stroke, 12 with Parkinson’s disease, 12 with MS, and 2 with neurosurgical conditions). Data were analyzed using Atlas.ti 22 following Colaizzi’s method. Results: Analysis of the interviews generated 200 codes, which were grouped into five main themes: relationship with healthcare providers, relationship with the environment, role of the family, boredom and lack of activities, and perception of dependency. The role of physiotherapists and nursing assistants (OSS) was central in the hospitalization experience, while physicians and nurses were less frequently mentioned in patients’ narratives. Conclusions: Personalized care approaches are needed to support effective rehabilitation. Involving patients in goal setting improves their experience, particularly for those with Parkinson’s disease and MS. Stroke patients require greater emotional support and structured care. The therapeutic value of the environment is confirmed as a key element.
Background: l’esperienza di ricovero incide in modo significativo sugli esiti in neuroabilitazione.
