BACKGROUND: The assessment of clinical competencies in physiotherapy students represents a crucial challenge within university training contexts. Writing the rehabilitation record during the internship is a key exercise to foster clinical reasoning and critical reflection. However, the absence of standardized evaluation criteria can make grading subjective and highly variable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this project was to evaluate the use of a structured grid for the analysis of rehabilitation records written by third-year students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy during their internship in the neurological field, in order to verify its effectiveness, clarity, consistency, and applicability. The evaluation also included a comparison with the traditional assessment method and the collection of qualitative feedback from evaluators. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This pilot study was conducted at the University of Padua and involved third-year Physiotherapy students during their neurological internship, the clinical academic tutor, and students of the Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Sciences of Health Professions who were engaged in teaching-related internship activities. A 18-item evaluation grid was applied, divided into content areas (n=13) and form (n=5), inspired by the CARE checklist and the format already in use. Each item was assigned a score from 1 to 4, for a maximum cumulative score of 33. Finally, structured interviews were carried out to collect evaluators’ perceptions and possible suggestions and/or modifications. RESULTS: The application of the grid led to greater uniformity in assessment, making the evaluation criteria clearer for both students and evaluators. Discrepancies were found between previous subjective assessments and those obtained using the grid. The focus group highlighted a positive impact on students’ training awareness and on the perceived objectivity of the evaluators, while also pointing out some critical issues. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The introduction of the evaluation grid improved coherence and transparency in grading, reducing subjectivity on the part of evaluators and promoting a more structured and conscious approach to clinical cases among students. Some limitations emerged, including the small sample size and the need for initial training for the proper use of the tool. Nevertheless, the grid proved to be an effective instrument, useful both for the drafting and for the evaluation of rehabilitation records, fostering a more transparent, shared, and educationally meaningful assessment process.
