Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by the destruction of pancreatic beta cells, which leads to a lack of insulin. For patients with poor blood glucose control, allogeneic islet transplantation can be a useful therapeutic option that helps improve quality of life and reduce episodes of severe hypoglycemia. The aim of this thesis is to describe the clinical and nursing pathway of islet transplantation, focusing on the nurse’s role within the multidisciplinary team. A literature review was carried out to explore the main technical aspects of transplantation, the selection of recipients, and the important contribution of nurses. The review highlights that nurses have a key role not only in clinical management, but also in patient education, emotional support, and in promoting treatment adherence. Their technical and communication skills are essential to ensure safety, continuity of care, and better quality of life for the patient. In conclusion, islet transplantation is a promising therapy for patients with unstable Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, and the nurse’s contribution is an essential part of its success.
