Background: Phantom limb pain is a chronic pain perceived after amputation of a limb. The causes can be different: tumors, trauma, vascular diseases and infections. Phantom limb pain occurs in a percentage ranging from 40% to ’80% of people who undergo an amputation. As regards the pediatric oncology population, the percentage varies from 48% to 90%. The role of the nurse must be multidimensional, dealing both with clinical aspects, and be a psychological support. Objective: To investigate nurses' knowledge with respect to pain perceived by the patient after amputation of a limb (phantom limb pain), its management and knowledge of related treatments. Materials and methods: descriptive observational study through the administration of a questionnaire that I created based on scientific literature. The questionnaire is divided into a first section (composed of 6 items) which aims at the collection of demographic information and training and work experience of the individual nurse; the second section (17 items) investigates nurses' knowledge about phantom limb pain. Results: The study sample observed includes 38 responses: 27 responses from the Pediatric Oncohematology UOC of the Padua Hospital and 11 responses from the Soft Tissue, Peritoneum and Melanoma Oncology Surgery UOC of the Veneto Oncology Institute. Discussion and conclusions: the results collected highlight that there is a basic knowledge in the majority of the nurses examined. The gaps relate to pathophysiological causes, symptomatology, use of tools for pain identification and assessment. Regarding the knowledge of pharmacological treatments and the non-pharmacological strategies that can be implemented, the results demonstrate partial awareness. It is encouraging given that it suggests to us the importance expressed by these nurses on the aspect related to the empathic relationship with the patient and their awareness regarding the insufficient preparation in the management of the phantom limb.
