The thesis analyzes the origins and role of the paramilitary organization known as “Gladio” within the context of the Cold War, with particular attention to its use as an instrument of both ideological and operational deterrence against the expansion of communism in Italy and Western Europe. After reconstructing the historical-political framework in which the Stay-Behind network emerged, the study examines the collaboration between U.S. intelligence services and Italian authorities, highlighting Gladio’s objectives: to safeguard the Atlantic order in the event of a Soviet invasion or the rise of left-wing forces in Western countries. Through the analysis of documentary sources, parliamentary records, and scholarly literature, the analysis shows that Gladio functioned not only as a defensive operation but also as a tool of anti-communist containment.

Abstract
The thesis analyzes the origins and role of the paramilitary organization known as “Gladio” within the context of the Cold War, with particular attention to its use as an instrument of both ideological and operational deterrence against the expansion of communism in Italy and Western Europe. After reconstructing the historical-political framework in which the Stay-Behind network emerged, the study examines the collaboration between U.S. intelligence services and Italian authorities, highlighting Gladio’s objectives: to safeguard the Atlantic order in the event of a Soviet invasion or the rise of left-wing forces in Western countries. Through the analysis of documentary sources, parliamentary records, and scholarly literature, the analysis shows that Gladio functioned not only as a defensive operation but also as a tool of anti-communist containment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
