The thesis examines the evolution of the city of Teschen (today divided between Poland and the Czech Republic as Cieszyn and Český Těšín), using it as a paradigm to reflect on the geopolitical, diplomatic, and cultural transformations that have shaped Europe from the dissolution of the Central European empires to contemporary European integration. By analyzing both international and local relations, the study investigates how the political and diplomatic management of the city mirrored Europe’s major historical transitions: from the end of the First World War through the interwar period, the overcoming of the Cold War, and eventual accession to the European Union. The research highlights how the city, initially a site of national and diplomatic confrontation, went through alternating phases of tension and cooperation, ultimately becoming a laboratory of cross-border governance within the EU. Special attention is given to the role national historical narratives played in shaping local policies and to how, after the fall of the USSR, historical memory became a tool for integration and reconciliation. The thesis aims to demonstrate how local diplomacy, supported by European policies, succeeded in transforming a divided city into a model of coexistence and collaboration.

Abstract
The thesis aims to demonstrate how local diplomacy, supported by European policies, succeeded in transforming a divided city into a model of coexistence and collaboration.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
