This thesis examines the historical, political, and social evolution of Istria between the First and Second World Wars, a period marked by profound transformations and identity tensions. Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the annexation of Istria to the Kingdom of Italy in 1920, the region underwent a process of forced Italianization, aimed at erasing the Slovene and Croat linguistic and cultural presence. Implemented by the Fascist regime, these policies drastically altered the ethnic and social balance of the territory. The research focuses on the impact of these authoritarian measures on the daily lives of local populations, the emergence of resistance movements, and the gradual marginalization of Slavic minorities. Particular attention is devoted to the Istrian exodus and the tragedy of the foibe massacres, events that, in the postwar years, deeply affected the collective memory and the relations between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. Through a historical-critical approach and the analysis of documentary sources, this study aims to provide a comprehensive view of the political and social transformations that shaped Istria in the early twentieth century, highlighting how this border region became a complex symbol of contested identities, memory, and reconciliation.
