ABSTRACT Introduction: Eating disorders (EDs) represent one of the most widespread psychopathological issues worldwide, with an increasing incidence, particularly during adolescence. The analysis of the literature highlights that the risk factors are not only biological and familial, but also sociocultural and digital. Social networks, which became central identity spaces, convey aesthetic and performative ideals that can exacerbate body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and dysfunctional eating behaviors. In this context, prevention plays a crucial role, focusing on the promotion of a more critical and conscious use of social media. This thesis also explores the contribution of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technician in preventive interventions, through a media literacy and psychoeducational project. Methodology: The intervention was carried out with students from the first two years of the “Marco Belli” State Institute in Portogruaro (VE), in collaboration with “Fenice” ODV Association, which is active in the prevention of EDs in schools. The project involved 73 students, divided into two groups to allow the replication of the same session on two separate days. Each session, lasting approximately 30 minutes, was conducted in a dialogic and interactive format. The contents addressed: • the functioning of algorithms and engagement dynamics of social media platforms; • the psychological mechanisms related to social comparison, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), and nomophobia; • the promotion of JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) and strategies for a more mindful and balanced use of social media. Evaluation was conducted through an anonymous final questionnaire designed to collect both qualitative and quantitative feedback. Results: The collected data revealed an overall positive evaluation and a strong level of engagement. Students reported increased awareness of the proposed topics and demonstrated a more critical understanding of their digital habits. Conclusions: The intervention confirmed the importance of primary prevention in the school setting, emphasizing the need for programs that are interactive, updated, and consistent with current technological developments. Furthermore, the findings highlight the effectiveness of interventions aimed at raising awareness and informing individuals about the mechanisms that control social media’s functioning, to promote a more autonomous and balanced use — without resorting to approaches of demonization or prohibition.
I social network, oggi spazi identitari centrali, veicolano modelli estetici e performativi in grado di amplificare insoddisfazione corporea, bassa autostima e comportamenti alimentari disfunzionali.
