This thesis explores the therapeutic significance of clothing in people with psychiatric conditions, with a special focus on the role of the occupational therapist in promoting well-being and the ability to choose through this daily activity. Dressing is much more than an action: it is an expression of personal identity, a means of communicating with others and a component of self-care. The literature on clothing psychology highlights how clothing can influence self-esteem, mood, and self-perception. The occupational therapist, as a health professional who deals with activities that are meaningful to the person, has a key role in supplementing clothing as part of the therapeutic process in the psychiatric setting. To investigate this issue, a study was conducted that included the partial administration of the BASIQ scale, an instrument for the Survey of Quality of Life, at the "Marco Polo" Day Center in Terni. 14 people with psychiatric disorders, aged between 19 and 66, were interviewed through an anonymous interview containing questions about the daily routine related to clothing and more specific aspects taken from BASIQ that concern choice and self-determination. The results highlighted how clothing plays an important role in everyday life and how it can become a significant tool of personal expression and self-determination, even in a context of mental distress. The considerations that emerged suggest the importance of considering clothing not only as a practical activity, but as a potential therapeutic tool within the intervention of the occupational therapist to promote quality of life.
