This thesis analyzes how the war in Ethiopia, fought by Italy between October 1935 and May 1936, influenced diplomatic relations between Italy and the United States of America. The work is divided into four chapters. The first chapter, which is introductory, contains a summary account of relations between Italy and the United States from the arrival of the first European explorers to the eve of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, and focuses particularly on relations with the fascist government and the importance of Italian migration overseas. The second chapter, on the other hand, contains a description of the historical events that led to the military dispute between Ethiopia and Italy, the story of the conflict, and the consequences it had on the international scene. The central part of my thesis is the third chapter, which analyzes the diplomatic exchanges between Rome and Washington from the months preceding the Ethiopian conflict to the issue of recognition of Italian conquests, two years later. Finally, with the fourth chapter, I wanted to add a consideration of the role played by the Italian-American community living overseas and the tensions that arose with the African-American community. The core of this work is based on the study of Italian and US diplomatic documents, archived online on the websites of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the American Office of the Historian.
