This study presents a literature review on the role of nurses in managing the spiritual dimension in palliative care. The research was conducted by consulting the PubMed and CINAHL databases, using specific search strings (“palliative care”, “nursing intervention”, “spiritual care”, “quality of life”, “nursing care”, "NANDA", “spiritual distress”). Articles published between 2015 and 2025, in English and Italian, indexed in scientific databases, concerning adult patients in palliative care and focusing on nursing support for the spiritual dimension were included. Studies on pediatric populations, non-palliative settings, or without accessible abstracts were excluded. Qualitative analysis of the selected studies highlights that spiritual support provided by nurses significantly contributes to improving quality of life, reducing anxiety, depression, and existential suffering in terminal patients. However, critical issues persist, related to lack of specific training, absence of validated tools, and organizational limitations of care settings. The results suggest the need for targeted educational programs and standardized protocols to systematically integrate spiritual assessment and management into palliative nursing practice, promoting truly holistic and person-centered care.
La ricerca è stata condotta consultando i database PubMed e CINAHL, utilizzando specifiche stringhe di ricerca (“palliative care”, “nursing intervention”, “spiritual care”, “quality of life”, “nursing care”, "NANDA", “spiritual distress”).

Abstract
The results suggest the need for targeted educational programs and standardized protocols to systematically integrate spiritual assessment and management into palliative nursing practice, promoting truly holistic and person-centered care.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
