Irrigation is an essential agronomic technique to obtain a satisfactory production both in quantitative and qualitative terms. Furthermore, the use of water resources in agriculture is acquiring more and more importance in recent years as due to climate change, an increase in the average temperature is generally observed with a simultaneous reduction in rainfall that lead to strong crops’ water stress phenomena. At the same time, however, the quantity of water for irrigation purposes is less due to the growing competition for other uses. Therefore, it is needed to sensitize all farmers to a conscious and intelligent use of water. This thesis aims to: 1) compare five different irrigation methods in the upper Veneto plain through a ten-year historical series of production data and 2) evaluate the potential water savings obtained managing the microirrigation of corn through a smartphone application (GIAcAMI). From the results obtained it emerges that none of the methods analyzed showed a grain yield significantly different from the others. All the irrigation methods studied were therefore effective in terms of production, but they significantly differ in terms of the irrigation water use efficiency, that is the yield of product obtained per unit of water supplied with irrigation. The irrigation management of corn with the application, in a year characterized by abundant rainfall during the crop cycle, did not allow any water savings compared to the classic management. On the contrary, in a drier year, the use of the application resulted in a 23% lower irrigation contribution compared to typical irrigation.

Abstract

Agronomic response of maize to different irrigation methods in the upper Veneto plain
