Introduction: The growing cultural diversity of society represents a challenge for the healthcare system, requiring the development of specific skills to ensure equitable and quality care. However, the integration of transcultural nursing into training programmes presents significant challenges. The lack of targeted preparation leaves the management of diversity to individual sensitivity alone, rather than a professional and structured approach. Objective: The aim of the study is to analyse the level of cultural competence perceived by students of the Nursing Degree Course at the University of Padua, Schio campus. The research aims to assess the different dimensions of cultural competence, identifying areas of strength and training gaps, in order to highlight critical issues in university training and provide practical recommendations. Materials and Methods: The descriptive survey involved students in their second and third years of the course. A digital questionnaire was administered, using the validated “Nurse Cultural Competence Scale”, integrating sections on socio-demographic data and perceptions of internship experiences and training received. Results: 109 students responded to the survey. 96.3% of students had experience with patients from different cultures, and 78% of the sample considered university education inadequate for developing cultural skills. The results show a moderate overall level of cultural competence (average score 49.90/80). There is a strong personal sensitivity in contrast to specific theoretical knowledge, which is the most deficient area. Conclusions: The study, in line with the scientific literature, records a significant level of cultural sensitivity, while at the same time emphasising the need for more structured training to develop professional skills. Exposure to cultural diversity during the internship alone is insufficient if not supported by adequate theoretical preparation. It appears essential to systematically and longitudinally integrate theoretical preparation with practical experience. Exposure to cultural diversity during the internship alone is insufficient if not supported by adequate theoretical preparation. It appears essential to systematically and longitudinally integrate the contents of transcultural nursing into university curricula, training professionals capable of responding effectively to the care needs of a multicultural society.
Risultati: All’indagine hanno risposto 109 studenti.
