This experimental research analyzes the effects of a pen-pal exchange in English between an Italian fifth-grade primary school class and a French class. Although English was not the students’ mother tongue, it served as the medium that enabled them to connect with one another and to discover the potential of using a foreign language as an authentic tool for communication and intercultural exchange. The project involved administering questionnaires to students in both classes in order to investigate the impact of the experience on their motivation to study English. The data revealed strong enthusiasm and a desire to participate in similar activities in the future. At the same time, attention was directed to the development of reading and writing skills. At the end of the project, the Italian experimental class completed a final written test, and the results were compared with those of a control class, also a fifth-grade class from the same school, which had not taken part in the exchange. This comparison further confirmed the validity of the project, both in terms of enhancing motivation and of strengthening communicative skills. The thesis is organized into five chapters: the first three provide a theoretical framework, outlining the teaching of English in primary schools, comparing it with other European contexts, with particular attention to France, and reflecting on the value of authentic tasks and pen-pal exchanges from an intercultural perspective. The last two chapters are devoted to the description of the experimental project, the methodology applied, and the analysis of the data, concluding with a pedagogical reflection on the results achieved and possible future developments.
La presente ricerca sperimentale analizza gli effetti di uno scambio epistolare in lingua inglese tra una classe quinta primaria italiana e una classe francese. L’inglese, pur non essendo la lingua materna degli alunni, è stato il mezzo che ha permesso loro di entrare in relazione e di scoprire la possibilità di utilizzare la lingua straniera come strumento autentico di comunicazione e di incontro interculturale. Il progetto ha previsto la somministrazione di questionari agli studenti di entrambe le classi per indagare l’impatto dell’esperienza sulla motivazione verso lo studio dell’inglese: dai dati è emerso un forte entusiasmo e il desiderio di ripetere attività simili in futuro. Parallelamente, l’attenzione si è rivolta allo sviluppo delle abilità di comprensione e produzione scritta. A conclusione del percorso, gli alunni della classe sperimentale italiana hanno sostenuto una prova scritta finale, i cui risultati sono stati confrontati con quelli di una classe di controllo, anch’essa quinta primaria dello stesso istituto, che non aveva partecipato allo scambio. Anche da questo confronto è emersa la validità del progetto, sia sul piano motivazionale sia su quello dello sviluppo delle abilità comunicative. La tesi si articola in cinque capitoli: i primi tre offrono una cornice teorica che inquadra l’insegnamento dell’inglese nella scuola primaria, ne confronta l’evoluzione con altri contesti europei, con particolare attenzione alla Francia, e riflette sul valore dei compiti autentici e dello scambio epistolare in chiave interculturale. Gli ultimi due capitoli sono invece dedicati alla descrizione del progetto sperimentale, alla metodologia adottata e all’analisi dei dati, concludendo con una riflessione pedagogica sui risultati raggiunti e sulle prospettive future.
