The thesis aims to focus on the social role played by female teachers in Italy between 1861 and 1910. During these years, the Italian school system was born and began to take shape. The paper initially concentrates on providing a historical overview of the socio-cultural context of Italy at the time, along with an explanation of the structure of the early school system. It then delves into the lives of several female teachers who actively engaged with the educational system, attempting to change it from within in order to make it more equitable and less discriminatory towards women. Finally, a teaching proposal is theorized in the form of a Learning Unit (UDA), to be carried out in the classroom with the aim of raising awareness among younger generations about gender stereotypes. For the writing of this research, I consulted various bibliographic materials (both printed and online), which I then combined and reworked.
