The thesis examines the Pauca de libris Catholicorum scriptorum in euangelia excerpta, a short exegetical text of probable Irish origin, highlighting its structure, content, and significance within early medieval Hiberno-Latin literature. After introducing the text, the study reconstructs the historical and cultural context of late-antique Ireland, shedding light on the role of monasteries and the originality of insular exegesis. It then analyzes key themes of the Excerpta, such as the interest in the three sacred languages, didactic enumerations, and the interrogative approach typical of Irish monks. Particular attention is given to the symbolism of the four Evangelists, connected to biblical, patristic, and Hiberno-Latin traditions, revealing the richness of the symbolic associations (natural elements, the rivers of Paradise, seasons, cardinal directions). The investigation shows that Irish exegetical tradition, far from mere repetition, constitutes a lively and original intellectual laboratory, capable of blending erudition, creativity, and ancient apocryphal traditions.

La tesi analizza i Pauca de libris Catholicorum scriptorum in euangelia excerpta, un breve testo esegetico di probabile origine irlandese, evidenziandone struttura, contenuti e valore all’interno della produzione latino-ibernica altomedievale. Dopo aver presentato il testo, la ricerca ricostruisce il contesto storico e culturale dell’Irlanda tardoantica, mettendo in luce il ruolo dei monasteri e l’originalità dell’esegesi insulare. Vengono quindi esaminati temi centrali degli Excerpta, come l’interesse per le tre lingue sacre, le enumerazioni didattiche e l’approccio interrogativo tipico dei monaci irlandesi. Ampio spazio è dedicato alla simbologia dei quattro evangelisti, collegata a tradizioni bibliche, patristiche e iberniche, mostrando la ricchezza delle associazioni simboliche (elementi naturali, fiumi del Paradiso, stagioni, punti cardinali). L’indagine dimostra come la tradizione esegetica irlandese, lungi dall’essere mera ripetizione, rappresenti un laboratorio culturale vivace e originale, capace di fondere erudizione, creatività e antiche tradizioni apocrife.
