This thesis aims to analyse the chain of command of Caesar's army during the Gallic campaigns, paying particular attention to the relationship between Julius Caesar and key figures within the army. The objective is to understand how operational requirements and strategic changes influenced the distribution of military responsibilities. Through a critical analysis of Caesar's sources, De bello Gallico, and more recent historiography, the work highlights how the element of command is closely linked to the proconsul, but also shows how greater delegation of powers gradually became indispensable in response to the growing complexity of the theatre of war. The conclusions emphasise how the machine orchestrated by Caesar, which was able to bring Gaul under Roman control within nine years, demonstrates that the chain of command, legates and others, not without difficulty, offers a useful perspective for understanding the internal dynamics of the late Republican Roman army.
