This thesis, entitled “The Phenomenon of Femicide in Italy: Between Data and Representations”, aims to analyze the phenomenon of femicide in the Italian context, combining statistical data, the historical development of feminism, and the analysis of media representations, in order to promote greater awareness and foster a society free from gender stereotypes and violence against women. The research is divided into five main chapters. The first chapter introduces the theoretical framework, defining the concept of femicide, its etymological origins, and the historical evolution of the feminist movement through key figures such as Olympe de Gouges and Emmeline Pankhurst. Two culturalist theoretical perspectives are also explored —Intimate Partner Violence from a feminist perspective and Wolfgang and Ferracuti's subculture of violence—, which allow us to develop a critical perspective on the phenomenon. The second chapter provides an overview of femicide in Italy, analyzing the evolution of legislation protecting women's rights, with particular reference to the right to vote, gender equality in employment, and protection from violence. Istat data for the period 2021-2023 are examined and compared, with particular attention to the relationship between victim and perpetrator, integrating explanatory graphs. The analysis also includes the eighth Agenda 2030 Report, with a focus on the fifth Goal dedicated to gender equality. The third chapter investigates the media representation of gender-based violence, focusing on female stereotypes and their persistence among young Italians, as highlighted by IPSOS research (2020). The analysis also considers the Code of Ethics for Journalists and the Venice Manifesto (2017), as well as the study paths of the STEP Project on the language adopted in media and jurisprudential communication of acts of violence. The fourth chapter delves into the importance of prevention education, illustrating awareness concepts and classifications of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention according to Caplan (1964), and reporting examples of good practices, in particular of the Differenza Donna association. Finally, the fifth chapter describes the research methodology, defining objectives, compilation approach, and secondary source analysis, and discussing the critical limitations arising from the compilation nature, the spatiotemporal dimension, and the theoretical interpretation of the data. Overall, the thesis offers an integrated analysis of the phenomenon of femicide in Italy, combining empirical data, theoretical perspectives, and cultural representations, with the aim of promoting awareness, prevention, and critical reflection on the persistence of gender-based violence.
