This dissertation explores bilingualism and translanguaging, with a particular focus on how these two linguistic phenomena can influence bilinguals' identity. Many factors, such as globalization and migration, have contributed to the growth of bilingualism in today's society; resulting in a large number of people who possess knowledge of, and use, two languages to communicate. Translanguaging has been introduced as a pedagogical strategy that considers the full linguistic repertoire of bilingual students, to enhance their comprehension and communication skills; in recent years, it has also begun to be used as a theoretical approach to explain bilinguals' fluid use of their linguistic knowledge. The aim of this project is to investigate the relationship between bilingualism, translanguaging and identity, through the already existing literature and a small study involving four bilinguals from migrant families. The purpose of the study is to gain insights into their perception of the self in relation to bilingualism, and understand how they use their languages in conversation.
La presente tesi esplora il bilinguismo e il translinguismo, in particolare soffermandosi su come questi due fenomeni linguistici possono influenzare l'identità delle persone bilingue. Molti fattori, come la globalizzazione e l'immigrazione, hanno contribuito alla crescita del bilinguismo nella società contemporanea. Questo ha permesso che un grande numero di persone conosca e usi due lingue per comunicare. Il translinguismo è stato introdotto come strategia pedagogica che considera l'intero repertorio linguistico degli studenti bilingue, per rafforzare la loro comprensione e le loro abilità comunicative. Recentemente, ha iniziato ad essere utilizzato come approccio teorico per spiegare l'uso fluido da parte dei bilingue delle lingue da loro conosciute. Lo scopo di questo progetto è capire la relazione esistente tra bilinguismo, translinguismo e identità attraverso lo studio di materiale di ricerca già esistente e una piccola ricerca che coinvolge quattro bilingue provenienti da famiglie di immigrati. L'obiettivo della ricerca è di cogliere come i bilingue percepiscono la loro identità in relazione al bilinguismo e capire come usano le loro lingue nelle conversazioni.
